When word began to spread that the future of North Cascades National Park’s stock program was uncertain, something extraordinary happened: our community stepped in to help.
In just a few months, over 30 donors came together to contribute more than $100,000 in support of the park’s mules, horses, and the crews who work alongside them. This generosity sends a clear message — Washingtonians care deeply about protecting the trails and wild places that make the North Cascades so special.
The park’s stock team is essential to maintaining remote backcountry trails. These sure-footed animals haul hundreds of pounds of tools, supplies, and gear into rugged wilderness where vehicles can’t go. They’re not just hard workers — they’re friends, coworkers, and a major part of the crew, according to the park’s facilities chief.
Thanks to your support, the park can continue this important work with the equipment and resources the stock program needs to thrive. Your gifts will help fund everything from hay and hoof care to training, vet visits, and tack repair.
The park is also preparing to acquire a new riding horse, expanding the capacity of a team that makes backcountry stewardship possible. Having available funding to tap into when unexpected needs and opportunities arise helps ensure this beloved aspect of the park’s operations can continue.
This is more than a story about animals or infrastructure — it’s about people coming together to support something bigger than themselves.
We’re inspired by the donors who stepped up, the rangers and trail crews who rely on this program, and the enduring spirit of teamwork that defines the North Cascades.
This kind of impact is only possible because of you. Every trail cleared, every bridge repaired, and every remote camp made accessible is a direct result of your investment in the future of our parks.
Thank you for being part of this story.
