My life is centered on connecting people with nature, inspired every day by my love of Washington’s amazing landscapes and remarkable wildlife. I’m honored to share my passion and experience to help WNPF safeguard our state’s most cherished places.

Karen serves as the Chair of the Marketing Communications Advisory Council

Karen spent her professional life as a zoologist, educator, writer, and conservationist working in accredited zoological facilities, the last twenty-two years with Metro Parks Tacoma’s Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. As Conservation Engagement Manager, she oversaw guest and community education, stewardship, and science programming for the two zoos. Karen also managed partnerships advancing conservation initiatives, legislation, and wildlife field projects – from fisher recovery to efforts reducing ocean plastics. Prior to her advancement to the Metro Parks senior leadership team, Karen spent many years as an animal care professional, working with a diverse array of animal species, raising and training them as animal ambassadors for engaging people in conservation. A wild cat specialist, Karen also leads the non-profit Clouded Leopard Project to develop and support conservation efforts for this endangered animal.

Now embracing a life of adventure and exploration with friends and family, Karen enjoys traveling regionally in her camper and to more far-flung destinations in pursuit of wildlife viewing, hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities. She’s excited to have more time to devote to her writing and photography interests that help her share her spirit of “wonderlust” and nature discovery with others. No matter where she roams, Karen always looks forward to returning to her beloved national parks in Washington and the wonder and delight that welcome her home.
