Trailblazers: Philanthropy Director Susan Nebel

January 18, 2022

Washington’s National Park Fund works to fund priority projects in Mount Rainier, North Cascades and Olympic National Parks, and we couldn’t do it without our dedicated supporters. Our Trailblazers series celebrates these passionate park lovers and all of the different ways they give back, whether by donating their time or talent, volunteering, fundraising, or something else entirely.

This week, meet the newest member of the WNPF team: Susan Nebel. Susan joins us after several years as a principal gift officer for Boston University. Over the years, she and her family frequented Washington’s national parks. Her lifelong dream? This new position.

As Director of Philanthropy for WNPF, Susan manages major giving for the organization and growing and cultivating relationships with passionate park lovers who give back through charitable gifts. She will play a key role in WNPF’s upcoming strategic growth campaign kicking off this year. With a keen sense of humor and a top-notch skillset at listening, Susan puts everyone she meets instantly at ease.

Q&A with Susan

What are some of your most memorable experiences in our parks?

I have many wonderful memories, but a few that stand out are the incredible smell of wildflowers when we hiked Hurricane Ridge, the beauty and serenity of Deer Lake, and the ocean vista from the Ozette Trail.

Do you have a favorite park?

No, just as I have no favorite child. 😊

What is your favorite thing to do now in the parks?

I love to hike and explore the various parks, and I look forward to adding snowshoeing as a winter activity.

What brought you to Washington’s National Park Fund?

Our family vacations were spent hiking in parks in the southwest, west, and often the northwest. My dream was to work for the national parks, and after years in higher education fundraising, my dream to fundraise for Washington’s national parks became a reality.

Can you tell us about your role and what you do?

As the Director of Philanthropy, I will focus on securing major gifts to benefit the parks, as well as partnering with Laurie and my colleagues to increase interest in, and philanthropy for the parks.

The absolute favorite part of my role is meeting people, listening to their stories about the parks, and connecting their passion for the parks to the philanthropic support that most resonates with them.

Are there any projects that we raise funds for that you’re especially passionate about?

I am passionate about Science & Research projects and projects to increase the use and enjoyment of the parks for all.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself that people might not know about you?

I ran the Big Sur Marathon in under four hours.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Only that I occasionally pinch myself to make sure I’m here and not dreaming! I am very excited about this opportunity.
