The existing 38′ bridge near the river on the Spruce Nature Trail is in poor condition. This project would replace the failing log stringer bridge with a steel “I” beam bridge with cedar deck, bull rails and concrete footings. This project would also improve drainage and tread on the 1.22-mile trail, adding crushed rock and raising the tread level in low areas and reducing resource impacts caused by visitors trying to avoid water/mud on the trail.

The Hoh Rain forest is one of the most popular destinations in Olympic National Park. In 2013 the Spruce Nature trail received an estimated 42,718 visitors. This project will allow the many visitors to have a safe enjoyable experience while minimizing resource impacts to the area.
