This project is designed to help the National Park Service learn about the hazards posed by recent debris flows in Stehekin. Specific goals are to (1) assess the geographical features that make some streams more prone to debris flows than others in the area (e.g., aspect, geology, elevation, fire history) and (2) determine the frequency of debris flows through radiocarbon and tree ring dating of past debris flow deposits. With this information, park management can begin to make educated land use decisions and improve public awareness of this hazard.
